I live a healthy lifestyle, and have for many years - I exercise daily, I eat a healthy, organic whole-food based diet free of meat & soy, I get 7 hours of sleep a night, etc. My goal was to achieve hormonal balance naturally, without the help of medication.
While some people adapt quickly to the changes the body is experiencing, my body did not - I've experienced weight gain, ongoing bloating, cystic acne on my face, neck, shoulders & chest, mood swings, etc. I gave my body time to adapt to the changes and tried to be patient and stay positive on this journey, as stress only makes things worse. But something wasn't right, each month my symptoms got progressively worse and my frustration increased. So, back to the drawing board I went. I was determined to figure out the root cause and was confident that my body could heal itself if I give it the right tools to do so.
In October, after more research, I put together a new plan of attack. In addition to the things I was already doing - daily exercise, lots of veggies & fruits, no meat & soy, quality sleep, cleansing & moisturizing with oil based/chemical-free skincare products (chemicals & synthetic ingredients disrupt hormones), etc., I made the following changes.
1) I added Maca powder into my diet. Maca is an adaptogen that helps to balance the hormones and provide natural energy. I take two tsp per day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. It can be added to juice, smoothies, water, etc.
2) I increased my probiotic intake. Hormonal balance simply cannot be achieved with an unhealthy gut. While I was already taking a daily probiotic supplement, I added more in throughout the day with food. Coconut yogurt and sauerkraut are two of my favorite probiotic-rich foods. Any fermented veggies will do the trick, but I've loved sauerkraut since I was a child, so this was an easy one for me.
3) This was a big one... I cut dairy out of my diet completely. While I've never been a big dairy fan in terms of milk, yogurt, etc. I was a cheese junkie. When I was on birth control pills, my body didn't have an issue with cheese (always organic), which is why I held onto it, but I was starting to suspect that this was a big part of my hormonal imbalance, so it had to go.
In just five weeks on this new plan, my body has responded very positively. My cystic acne... GONE. My skin is happy, clear and glowing again! My weight has dropped 1.5 pounds and I'm experiencing less bloating. My mood swings are few and far between, and I just feel better in general.
Hormonal balance is KEY to good health. When your hormones are unbalanced, you may experience sleep issues, depression, frequent illness, lack of energy, weight gain, acne, mood swings, etc. The good news is that you can balance your hormones naturally through diet and exercise, and the body WILL heal itself if you give it time and a chance to do so with the right foods.
I'm 43 years old, 100% medication free and my body is thriving, thanks to proper diet and exercise. Back to basics is always the answer.
